Academic writing skill determines most of your success in college. And on average of every semester, there are tons of written assignments that need to be finished. If you do not know how to manage your time for research efficiently, you will not have a good quality writing, which also means you are not going to get a good grade by the end of the semester.

Writing academic essays requires you to work smart rather than to work hard. Here is a guide for you to achieve that skill.

Read more to write better

BooksA person’s thought relies heavily on his/her information intake. A smart essay discusses hot issues in the relevant fields. For example, in politics, the current hot topics are the controversial acknowledgment by the United States of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the deportation of immigrants coming from conflict areas. In science, radical hypothesis that says the universe is a hologram has been on the rise again since theoretical physicists from the University of Southampton have discovered new proofs for the theory.

It is important to keep updated with hot topics if you want your essay to be taken seriously among academicians. And the only way to achieve that is by scheduled reading. You should take reading journals and relevant primary sources seriously. Put the schedule with alarms on your phone, and do not make excuses when it rings. Allocate at least 25 minutes every day to check on the hot issues of your interest.

Polishing your syntax and semantics

Cohesion essayThe syntax of a sentence affects how logical it sounds to the reader. A sentence with lousy syntax is hard to understand and conceals the important message of the whole essay. It does not matter how exciting your essay’s topic is. If you write it with bad grammar, no one can appreciate your idea.

Semantics is the coherence and cohesion of your essay when read wholly. Coherence is the flow of logic of the ideas on your essay, while cohesion is the fluency and the unity among the ideas. For example, you write about how universal healthcare was better during Obama’s presidency. One section discusses how healthcare is important for the country’s economic development¬†with four elaborately-detailed paragraphs, while other sections are obviously lacking in information. That means the essay lacks cohesion. Coherence will be an issue if your essay suddenly discusses Obama’s involvement in Afghanistan and Somalia bombardment, which has no relevance to his healthcare policy.

Expanding your technical terminology

Vocabulary for EssasyEvery academic field has their specified terminology. In fact, what differentiates an expert from non-specialists is their capacity to use specialized vocabulary. For example, the word ‘collateral’ in economics means differently in politics. In economics, collateral means a security that a borrower of a loan can offer to the lender. Collateral serves as a guarantee for the lender. But in politics, when the word ‘collateral’ is paired with ‘damage’ and forms the phrase ‘Collateral Damage’, the combined term refers to unintended victims of a covert military action.

Academic essays use specialized vocabulary, and that is the essential characteristic of it. You should allocate your time specifically to learn all of the academic terminologies of your field. You can start from the words that frequently appear in journals. Do not just memorize them, but also understand how those words mean in contexts.
